New piece
As i enjoy spamming this blog with work, here is a new page for the picture book project which if all's well is due for completion just shy of my 40th birthday. any comments would be greatly appreciated. hope everyone is having a nice summer :)
aww milan thats gorgus!! :O and thanx for the picture this comment tehehe i so wanted to make it into the top 6 :( the bastards lol i agree they have gone for safe entries. but i guess they want to make sure the book will sell so they have gone for the fairly 'mainstrea' styles. but yah! this image is stunning. the bees make it for me :)
Niiice, one of the first pics you've done that I've struggled for criticism! I Like the word layout and colour palette! I'm not too sure of the "over" fuzziness of the blanket and face though, especially with the fuzziness over the guys face, is it possible to tone that down a little and maybe emphasize a little more clarity on the edge of the boys face? I appreciate why you've done it, and it does generally work, but I think it needs to chill out just a little! Hope that helps, I was impressed with this though!
I don't think the fuzzy glow around the blanket is necessary either. Your children look very sad and very serious, but I quite like this look. Be careful that you stay consistent with the age of the boy the whole way through your book.
I loved the colours, I can see them fitting better with your other pages.
yeah im glad u thought the same cherry i think for that competition u had to sell yourself a little and adapt to a mainstream style that donaldson would go for rather than stick straight to your own style. cheers for the compliment cherry- really nice of u to say :) yeah that fuzziness of the (deep breath) boys face/wall/blanket/glow/pillow wasn't intentional...i had to darken the image as it is a night time scene, but this inadvertently brought out all the detail and emphasised it too much. i may take the glow off the blanket if its a little too much and blur the image just to take the grain off the image somewhat. yeah i drew the boy's hair messier cuz he's in bed but it looks like toni and guy have come in during the night and given him a maturer look. i think the face is still consistently youthful. thanks for your critcisms and compliments murray and chiu :) bologna eyyy? mayyybe
hahaha bologna festival!? Is this the same bologna festival that's a classical extravaganza!? It looks awesome, as classical music is awesome- but despite the lack of funds to justify going to italy for classical music, is there any art connection to this haha!?
whaaaaaat. classical music? really hate that stuff. lets go! thanks for that spotify stuff the other day murray. my ears are still burning. could think about bologna if there is actually some kind of art involved lol
thanks cherry lol i wanna keep the glow cuz it looks a bit magical but theres not much support for it, and i wasnt sure cuz when u stare at a piece of work for ages u forget what actually looks good or bad. i just checked out that post chiu, it says there are translators. IMAGINE we went all that way and all it included was classical music and brilliant speeches that were strictly in italian.
thanks again cherry lol children's books need that warm and fuzzy side to them as well otherwise like u said it might go the other way and look a bit sinister. i've used glows elsewhere so i think i might keep it to keep that consistency of magical elements within the imagery.

ReplyDeleteoh i forgot to add, without the glow i think it might look a bit dark
